cassette tape loading problem
Model A - I can save programs to tape but can not load them back in. After running the load command screen does not flicker and the prompt does not appear. Any ideas?

Re: cassette tape loading problem
Hi Trevor...
First I assume that we are talking about a recorder like the one in this link.
http://www.newbrain.info/component/opti … ail/id,48/
1. If you haven't done it yet, clean it.
Clean the tape-head and the rubber-pressure-wheel with a cotton-stick and alcohol.
2. Now listen to a music-tape. Does the music sound like it runs in a steady speed?
If not clean then pressure-wheel some more. It could be the internal drive-belts that are slipping. (if so, find a better recorder)
3. Then it's time for adjusting then tracking of the tape-head.
There should be a hole in the cassette-lid where you can see the screw on the tape-head, while playing. If not, drill it...
Adjust for best sounding music.
4. Now it's back to testing with the NB.
Most problems occurs because of to high volume. Start with then volume turned down to about a 1/4 and increase it with a 1/4 (or less) until you get success. The volume has nothing to do with the "saving", only the "loading"
Of course you can have a bad tape. A good trick is to start the recording 30sec into the tape.
Also try with out the remote (the one that NB can start and stop the cassette-recorder) The power on and off can mess-up the recording so it's better to let it run.
Happy testing

Re: cassette tape loading problem
Thankyou for that Michael,
I have cleaned the tape head and pinch wheel several times as you suggest, typed in a simple program, saved it to tape, and tried to verify it adusting the volume each time but to no avail. athen tried another tape recorder repeating the same procedure and still nothing. The tape recorders seem to work fine with other computers i have. ???

Re: cassette tape loading problem
Hi Trevor...
Can you hear the data if you play it on the cassette-speaker. Is the NB putting data on the tape is what I ask about?
Have you checked the speaker cable to the NB. It could be broken.
Then there is the "Sense" adjusts on the NB. Mine are turned all most up full. 80% I guess. (Clockwise when you look into the back of the NB)
It's not that big an issue. It should be working from 20% to 100%. It's just a matter of turning the volume up/down on the cassette recorder.
The I'm running out of ideas...
There could be a issue with old capacitors in the NB. They have a tendency of losing there value. Fx. failed Power-on is a common problem due to this.
